A Note from Our Founder
At some point, control stops being leadership.
It becomes a bottleneck.
If your company can’t function without you in every decision, you haven't built scale. You’ve built dependency. Isolation can feel powerful. Authority can distort feedback. Standards can quietly bend under pressure. That’s how brittle cultures form.
This Field Note examines what changes when founders move from lone architect to co-builder. Shared labor. Clear guardrails. Advisors who challenge you. Teams who can say no.
That’s how organizations endure beyond personality.

How To: Build a Brand Through Perseverance

Katie Shields began her career working in medical device sales and later transitioned to healthcare software sales. While she enjoyed her career and the sales aspect of it, she felt unfulfilled by the corporate grind and the thought that she was helping to build someone else's business. This realization sparked her desire to create something of her own.
During her maternity leave in 2017, Katie stumbled upon an opportunity to start Charleston's first non-toxic nail salon. Despite having no prior experience in the industry, she decided to take the leap and build the salon from the ground up. Drawing from her own experiences as a customer, she aimed to provide a healthier and more environmentally friendly option for nail treatments.
The nail salon venture proved to be successful, and Katie even franchised the business. However, the COVID-19 pandemic hit, causing significant challenges for many businesses, especially salons. The rules and regulations imposed during the pandemic made it difficult for the salon to operate, and many employees, including mothers, struggled to juggle childcare and work responsibilities.
Fortunately, during this challenging time, Katie was approached by the founders of Clean Juice, a company with approximately 200 locations, who offered her an opportunity. Clean Juice is a franchise specializing in organic and healthy juice options. This new venture aligned with Katie's passion for health and wellness, and she saw it as a chance to continue building her own business while making a positive impact.
